Getting Started at The Old Garden

My name is Skye and I want to invite you to follow along with our journey as we endeavour to turn a bare field into an awesome community facility.

This past week saw the official commencement of the project with a sod turning ceremony. Though volunteers have been working away for weeks planting thousands of bare rooted natives in a corner of the site, in the hope of creating a small pocket forest.

Wednesday saw the first allocation of plots go to local gardeners. I was among those walking around trying to pick out the right plot for me. As someone who has absolutely no idea what they’re doing, of course I picked my plot based on the view of the mountains and not proximity to water, parking or toilets… A decision I’m hoping I won’t come to regret in time.

On this page I will be documenting my own allotment journey, as a novice gardener with an interest in sustainability and a shoestring budget. I will also discuss the plans and progress of the overall development on the property, chat with other plot holders about what they’re trying to achieve, and maybe even put a spotlight on specific methods of gardening that may work for our location.

If you have any particular topics you want me to cover please don’t hesitate to get in touch directly at allotment_antics on Instagram or via the Contact page on this website. Also, if my vernacular ever comes across a little weird it’s because I’m an Aussie, don’t hold it against me.
